10 Bible Study Tips for Adults

Studying the Bible is a deeply rewarding spiritual practice that helps us grow in faith, knowledge, and understanding. Whether you’re new to adult Bible studies or looking to deepen your current practice, these tips for studying the Bible can help you make the most of your time with Scripture.

How to Study the Bible

1. Set a Clear Purpose

Before diving into any Bible study for adults, it’s important to set a clear purpose. Ask yourself what you hope to gain from your study. Are you seeking spiritual growth, looking for answers to specific life questions, or simply wanting to understand the Bible better? Defining your purpose will help guide your study and keep you focused.

2. Choose a Bible Translation and Type

Selecting a Bible translation that you find readable and understandable is crucial. Some popular translations include the New International Version, English Standard Version, and New Living Translation. Different translations can offer varying levels of formality and readability, so choose one that helps you connect with the text.

It can also be enormously helpful to use a study Bible, which is simply a regular Bible that includes extensive explanatory notes and may also contain other supplemental materials, like maps, charts, illustrations, and photographs, to enhance your understanding. Remember, the Scriptures don’t exist in a vacuum. They are deeply interconnected with history, geography, genealogy, culture, philosophy, politics, and other contextual factors.

3. Create a Study Schedule

Consistency is key when studying the Bible, so be realistic about when and how often you plan to do it. Set aside a specific time each day or week to dedicate to your study. Whether it’s for 15 minutes a day or an hour each week, creating a routine helps build good study habits and keeps you engaged with Scripture.

4. Start Each Session With Prayer

Before you begin studying, take a moment to pray. Ask for understanding, wisdom, and insight as you delve into the Word of God. Praying before study can open your heart and mind to the messages within the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to guide your learning.

5. Use Study Tools and Resources

Enhance your study by using high-quality Bible study tools and resources. Commentaries, concordances, and Bible dictionaries can provide additional context and explanations for difficult passages. Online resources and apps can also offer daily devotionals, reading plans, and study guides to assist in your efforts. For example, you can find fully searchable online Bibles with various translation options.

6. Focus on One Book or Topic at a Time

Rather than trying to cover large portions of the Bible quickly, focus on one book or topic at a time. This approach allows for a deeper understanding of the text and prevents you from feeling overwhelmed. Choosing adult Bible study topics doesn’t have to be difficult; you can explore concepts or themes that are important to you or books of the Bible you’ve had difficulty understanding in the past. For example, you might study the Gospel of John or focus on the theme of forgiveness throughout the Bible.

7. Take Notes and Reflect

As you read, take notes on key points, questions, and insights that stand out to you. Writing down your thoughts helps reinforce what you’ve learned and provides a reference for future study. After completing a study session, spend time reflecting on what you’ve read and how it applies to your life.

8. Join a Bible Study Group

Studying the Bible with others can provide different perspectives and insights that you might not have considered on your own. A group setting allows for discussion, questions, and shared learning, making the study experience richer and more communal. Your church may offer Bible study classes or social circles, like LifeGroups, that engage in regular collaborative Bible study sessions.

9. Apply What You Learn

One of the most important aspects of Bible study is applying what you’ve learned to your daily life. Scripture is meant to guide our actions, thoughts, and decisions. After studying, consider how the lessons from the Bible can influence your behavior, relationships, and choices.

10. Stay Patient and Persistent

Bible study is a lifelong journey, and it’s normal to encounter challenging passages or feel like progress is slow. Stay patient and persistent, trusting that each study session brings you closer to understanding God’s Word. Over time, your knowledge and faith will grow, enriching your spiritual life.
